I've been entertaining myself by working with photos I took in Laon to see what kinds of close-ups I can make out of them. Here are a few. All of them can be enlarged. Walt tells me he enjoyed a day trip to the town in 1981 or 1982, when he was spending a year in Paris. He and I went back there in 1994. The next and most recent visit for me was in 2011 with CHM. I need to go back again.
These cathedrals are all the same, and they’re all different!
ReplyDeleteLaon is certainly worth several visits. You discover something new at each visit.
I am enjoying seeing Laon through your lens.
It's unusual (to me) to see the portals pushed out so far in front of the main façade. It doesn't seem like I think of any of the other cathedrals doing that, at least not in such a pronounced way. It's good for giving Laon a way to identify it LOL.
ReplyDeleteOK yes, so that's the reason the west front looks different. Reims and Laon could be a day trip, or add Amiens for 2 days.
DeleteAdd Tournai to make good measure!
DeleteThe west façade in Tournai looks more Italian than Belgo-French. But the five towers at the transept are stunning!
DeleteThose arches and their carvings are a magnificent tribute to the skill of the stonemasons!!
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you, Tim.
