Here's a Cambrai slideshow that is made up of photos I took when I took a walk around the town in June 2011. Cambrai [kã-`bray] is a town of about 35,000 in French Flanders, not far from the Belgian border. It's history goes back to Gallo-Roman times.
Interesting slideshow. As you said a few days ago, Cambrai’s architecture is much less interesting than Arras’.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see the stone-edged brick, coupled with those parapets (I think that’s the term) that look so Flemish…. And then a wonderful wood façade for that Charcuterie, in art nouveau style!

Judy, if I understand what you’re saying, parapet is not the word you’re looking for. Parapets are not used in French’s house vocabulary. The term you are looking for, I think, is barre d’appui. Just google it for images and definition.

DeleteThanks to you Ken I found what it is and a world away from rempart. It is gâble flamand. Google it and you’ll see a lot of images of what we’re looking for. Gâble is usually used in cathedrals or churches.
