Les magasins

One of the things our friend Cheryl wanted to do on the île d'Oléron was to buy gifts for some of her friends in California as well as some souvenirs for herself. Alors on a fait les magasins... We went shopping. Here's some of the stuff we saw...

One of the things about traveling with a dog is that your activities have to be restricted and adapted to the pup's needs. While Cheryl and I browsed the souvenir and crafts shops, Walt stayed with Callie the collie, walking her around in whatever village or neighborhood we happened to be in. I think that suited him just fine, since he's not much of a shopper.

    2. The French Ovens Le Creuset are probably made in France.

    3. I like the porcelain, but hard to get home on a suitcase. The little lighthouses are cute and easier to travel with. The tiles look like they were painted by local artists....

    4. CHM, I wouldn't bet on the Le Creuset ovens being made in France. The mustard seeds used to make Dijon mustard are imported from Canada, and the little cucumbers that are sold as cornichons in France are grown and processed in India. Entre autres...

  2. You know, we have a birdhouse lighthouse, blue and white, that looks an awful lot like the ones here. We bought it at an estate sale. I'll have to see if it is marked as anything... or just Made In China ;)

    1. Cheryl complained that it was hard to find any thing really French in the shops here. I've had the same experience in the U.S. We need to get over it!

  3. I love pottery and have brought several pieces home safely. Every year the gift shops sell new ideas. One year it was little plates with serrations to scrape garlic with, the addition of olive oil made a tasty dip for bread.

    2. Well, that one worked. We have a bowl like the one you describe, with a rough patch at the bottom for scraping/grating garlic. Sue gave it to us one Christmas back in California.
