The Arc de Triomphe, a 19th century monument, is another vantage point for taking in views of Paris — especially of the Champs-Elysées and the Place de l'Etoile. I (or my camera, actually) had a good view of the arch from the top of the Tour Montparnasse.
The distance from the Tour Montparnasse to the Arc de Triomphe is about 5 kilometers — that's 3 miles. In the photo below, you can see the crowd up on the observation deck of the arch, at a height of 50 meters (165 ft.), compared to 210 meters (699 ft.) for the Tour Montparnasse.
A few years ago, CHM and I made the trip from his apartment over to the Arc de Triomphe, to take some photos. You can see some of them in blog posts of mine from 8 years ago, here and here. Below are a couple of examples.

Was it the Canon or the Panasonic?
ReplyDeleteThe first two photos, taken from the Tour Montparnasse, are from the new Panasonic (Lumix TZ60). The second two are photos I took in September 2007 when we went over to the Arc together. They were taken with my at-the-time new camera, the Panasonic Lumix .... TZ3. They are good, aren't they?
DeleteAll are great photos -- the user of the cameras is doing a great job ;)
ReplyDeleteMerci, J.
DeleteI found it absolutely fascinating up on top of the Arc as darkness fell, watching the lights of the traffic moving round l'Etoile: from above it doesn't look like such a mad scrum. And it's a great place to view the Eiffel Tower lighting up.
ReplyDeleteAgree totally. There's some kind of magic in the night lights. I especially enjoyed a January evening up there while the holiday decorations were still up on the Champs Elysees. With the blue decorations, the red tail lights and white headlights, it was so much like a huge French flag. Daytime, just so much hustle bustle.
DeleteGreat pics and lighting. The sculpture on the Arc de Triomphe is wonderful. La Résistance de 1814 je pense.
ReplyDeleteWe used to stay with friends who lived in the top floor of a building on Avenue de la Grande Armée, one of the streets that radiates out from the circle, a block or so from the Arc. There was an elevator, thank goodness.
This was another traffic circle I had to go round a few times before I was able to exit.
