Hoping

I'm here this morning hoping that our friend Diogenes and his house are nowhere near the L.A. fires I'm seeing reports about on MSNBC.

I didn't get anything done on the micro computer yesterday. I'm trying to think of anything I did accomplish, besides some grocery shopping and cooking lunch. Not much, I guess.

It rained all day and all night. We had heavy squalls earlier this morning. We also had very strong winds. I lay awake in bed for a few hours listening to the sound of raindrops slapping roof tiles and skylight (Velux) windows, and wind howling and whistling under the eaves of the house. Finally, at 4:30 I couldn't stand it any more and I got up.

I'm also having serious security problems with my Windows laptop. I finally was able to log in to Gmail a couple of minutes ago after a dozen attempts. I was closed out of Blogger for a while, but I just got it back. I think Google has gone crazy. This is my post for the day.

  1. Sorry to hear about those security issues. Lewis had two Amazon packages arrive that he didn't order- laundry products. When I googled the problem, I was told to change the password and I did. I would be lost without google's helpfulness lol.

    1. Evelyn, did you get a QR code to deal with that erroneous Amazon delivery? There has been a scam going around with this scenario. The QR code takes you to a bad place, where you don't want to be putting in any information.

  2. Cooking lunch and grocery shopping are two things I'd consider as "things accomplished today" :)

  3. Hi Ken, thank you for thinking of us. We are located about a mile from the fast moving Sunset fire that broke out yesterday afternoon. That really surprised me, because I though we were safe being several miles (about 8) from the Palisades fire. In the early evening they evacuated the area just to the north of us, which is in the hills. We had overnight bags packed in case we had to go, but late last night they were able to get that fire under control as the winds calmed down. In all the years I've been here this is probably the worst I've seen.

    2. Diogenes, I’m glad you have your “Go Bags” packed. We live in the Okanagan Valley in BC where wildfire season happens every year and with wind changes, fires can sneak up on one. We have a standard packing list and we prepare our “Go Bags” every spring in anticipation of fire season before Evacuations Alerts are posted. Sometimes, you’re only given 5 minutes to leave. One year, there weren’t enough places to put up evacuees and people wound up car camping in parking lots. Therefore, I now have an extra packing list where I add things to the car between the time of the “Alerts” and “Evacuation Orders” so that we can subsist until Emergency Services can place us. We try to be the first to leave as there is often only one road out. Check out 72hours.ca for emergency planning.

    3. Thank you for this kind heads up, given from experience! This is our "first time at the rodeo" with fires this close to home. Alerts and then Evacuation Orders is just how the info came out here, over everyone's cell phones. Thanks!

  4. Hi Ken, I get a lot of inspiration from your meals. Because you have a big cooked meal at noon, I’m curious about what you have for an evening meal?

    1. We "graze" a little in the evening, having a bowl of soup or a piece of cheese, etc. We don't cook much beyond a grilled cheese sandwich or some leftover beans out of the refrigerator as an evening snack.

  5. As ever, Seine Judeet said it first. Actually, I think just cooking lunch is accomplishment enough. -- Chrissoup
