Avignon views

Above left is a view out over the city of Avignon that I took from near the palais des papes. Above right, is a view looking west toward the town of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, with its 14th century fortifications, le fort Saint-André.

Voici le fameux pont d'Avignon où l'on danse tous en rond. The bridge has looked essentially like this since 1669.

Left, a typical house near the palais des papes. Right, another view from on high.

  1. Bénézet was the first, miraculous, architect of the bridge now dedicated to him, Pont Saint-Bénézet, a.k.a. pont d’Avignon. Originaly, Bénézet, the patron saint of bridge builders was buried in the chapel St.-Nicolas on the bridge.
The bridge - or what’s left of it - being so narrow, some say they couldn’t possibly dance en rond, but that it should be en long!
The photos, especially the one of pont Saint-Bénézet, are extremely good.

  2. I like seeing the fortress from afar. The red tiled roofs are beautiful. Have you been to the market today?

    1. It's hard for me to imagine too cold right now living in 'Bama!

    2. Evelyn, that fortress is Villeneuve-lès-Avignon on the other bank of the Rhone.

    3. It was too cold to go to the market yesterday morning. And it looked like it was going to rain. Our high temperature was about 68F. The temperature outside right now is 60F; yesterday it was more like 50F.
