Wow, Evelyn's comment made me look back at the Jackdaw to notice those blue eyes! The depiction of the red-haired woman in the stained glass is amazingly detailed, with the jewels and the shading in her face and the shading in her hair. I didn't know that you could accomplish that in stained glass.

Thanks for the guide. I'm not sure I can tell the difference between rooks and jackdaws in nature. In France, jackdaws are called choucas des tours. When we spent a week in the town of Bouzy in Champagne, we had a gîte near the village church and a huge flock of jackdaws or maybe jackdaws and rooks lived in the bell tower of the church. They were very noisy.
This wee jackdaw is an infant.... if you look at the beak it has an excess flap of skin that finishes just beneath the eye. All young birds have this because it makes their mouths look much bigger to their parents.... it is called the gape. The steely blue eyes of the jackdaw are amazing... and as a five-year-old, I had a very close encounter with a tame one which was placed on my shoulder and it eyeballed me very closely. It was, I have always thought, the spark that has kept me involved in nature my whole life!
Tim, are the differences between jackdaws and rooks obvious. I read in a bird book that the two species sometimes flock together, along with starlings.
Thanks for telling us about your jackdaw moment, that must have been a wonder to the child you. I once looked in the eye of a mountain gorilla which took my breath away. We are all related in this world.
