I have seen hundreds of paintings of St. Joan but it is always fun to see more as every artist has their own interpretation.Ben D. There are two in this post, and one in this one. They are the work of Charles-Henri Michel (1817-1905), whose grandson is a friend of mine.Ken Broadhursthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04430899802705818716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-12811240661403408892010-08-13T06:48:27.239+02:002010-08-13T06:48:27.239+02:00Hi Lo, it wasn't really courage. I had signed up, and I was glad to be in France again after two years back in the U.S.

Hello Leon, Joan traveled all around the region -- Chinon and also Loches, Mennetou-sur-Cher, and of course Orléans.

Melinda, hope it cools down soon. Nice weather here.

Evelyn, '72-'73 in Rouen was quite a year for me. I loved it, though there were moments when I was ready to throw in the towel. Luckily, there were two English teachers (out of about 10) who kept me busy and sane. With one of them, I actually wrote and published a book.

I caught the flu that Christmas and felt pretty isolated, because nearly everybody I knew had left Rouen to spend the holidays elsewhere.

Diogenes, you are right about RP. I didn't let it all get me down, really. There was too much to do to worry about it. By the way, there was a woman from Glasgow in Rouen that year, working as a teachers' assistant in another lycée. So I know that accent.Ken Broadhursthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04430899802705818716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-74805899465607224892010-08-12T22:18:10.524+02:002010-08-12T22:18:10.524+02:00I enjoyed the pictures of Rouen and Saint Joan of ...I enjoyed the pictures of Rouen and Saint Joan of Arc. ...Nice title to the post - it sounds like a movie.

I enjoyed the beautiful stained glass windows in the 'tour' and the wonderful painting by chm's granfather. No wonder the local musee was eager to get more of his work.

As for linguistic contamination, that had me laghing out loud. BBC English, or Received Pronunciation, is spoken by such a small sliver of the population. They could have had a genuine teacher from England with an "east enders" accent or a "Geordie" or Glasgow accent...

I had the reverse experience when I worked in Montreal. I had grown up learning French from Parisian and Belgian teachers, and in Canada, they liked my pronunciation because it was so different from theirs.Diogenesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-58251309377348356232010-08-12T14:30:13.559+02:002010-08-12T14:30:13.559+02:00The colors and composition of the photo with the M...The colors and composition of the photo with the Maclou eglise are lovely.

Joan is remembered throughout France, but her memory is strongest where she was tried and burned. I hope we will see those drawings of Joan's life by CHM's grandfather.

I'm impressed that you climbed all those steps, CHM!

Also loved hearing about your Rouen days, Ken.
