Our retirement pensions hadn't started yet. Besides, the dollar was falling like a lead balloon. When we paid the down payment on the house the rate was $1.00 = €0.94. A few months later it was $1.00 = €0.83. Five years later, it had gone down to about $1.00 = €0.63 (not a typo) Then the dollar started recovering a little. So we were very conservative in our spending, and we did a lot of work (taking down ratty wallpaper, sanding & painting walls & ceilings, gardening, etc.) ourselves. Now we have pension money coming in and one dollar is worth about €0.90 again. Our budget isn't as tight. The biggest unknown for us is future exchange rates.Ken Broadhursthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04430899802705818716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-7798786594002966782020-02-09T20:44:44.968+01:002020-02-09T20:44:44.968+01:00Those older pictures with the wall paper on the ce...Those older pictures with the wall paper on the ceiling are daunting....you know it's got to go. But it's a huge job. The entry hall looks much better with paint. Agree that the entry hall space is a bit perplexing in its size.<br />Diogenesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-23969045467257934722020-02-09T18:05:34.169+01:002020-02-09T18:05:34.169+01:00We've never lived in a house for so long befor...We've never lived in a house for so long before. Now things need to be done over again. And we keep having problems. Leaks, for example. Electricity — this morning at 5 a.m. I was sitting here doing my blog post when the house went dark. For no apparent reason. This time, when I turned the main breaker switch back on, everything was normal again. I wish I knew why the thing keeps cutting out that way. Heard from Walt this afternoon. All goes well there in Albany, despite frigid weather.Ken Broadhursthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04430899802705818716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-9592387375689173252020-02-09T17:52:22.614+01:002020-02-09T17:52:22.614+01:00Thanks for sharing amazing article.
