I've never understood the expression ...Hi Sue,

I've never understood the expression that way. Feed a cold meant eat to fortify yourself when you have a cold, but don't eat so much when you have a fever. In past centuries, fasting was considered to be a good way to fight off a fever. And look at this:

The maxim "feed a cold, starve a fever" may be right after all, researchers have discovered.

Until now, most doctors and nutritionists have rejected the idea as a myth. But Dutch scientists have found that eating a meal boosts the type of immune response that destroys the viruses responsible for colds, while fasting stimulates the response that tackles the bacterial infections responsible for most fevers.

"To our knowledge, this is the first time that such a direct effect has been demonstrated," says Gijs van den Brink of the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. At a Christmas dinner, he and his colleagues decided to take blood samples to see if alcohol affected the immune system.

See http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn1777-feed-a-cold-starve-a-fever-may-be-right.htmlKen Broadhursthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04430899802705818716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-11461659374161067532011-11-07T00:11:59.935+01:002011-11-07T00:11:59.935+01:00Hi Ken,

Colds are rotten things.
The saying actually is meant to mean that if you feed a cold, you are likely to get a fever - consequential kind of thing. Happy it wasn't so in your case.
Sue
Doing the anon thing as I can't remember Leon's sign in (again!)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-42700138130274606692011-11-06T21:24:58.316+01:002011-11-06T21:24:58.316+01:00The word verification for me today is very appropr...The word verification for me today is very appropriate for you, I believe:
k r a p h o

Sometimes we just need to feel "crappy" so that when we are well, we will really appreciate it!
