We were there last week, stocking up whilst we were in the area, and they had just started the harvest, so it's great to see updates!Helen Hewitthttp://carpevinum.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-79554215678804867992010-09-30T07:13:08.244+02:002010-09-30T07:13:08.244+02:00Kristi, nearly all the grapes here in the eastern ...Kristi, nearly all the grapes here in the eastern Touraine (the Cher Valley) are harvested mechanically. There are some exceptions. For example, one neighbor has a few parcels of very old vines that are planted too close together to allow a harvesting machine to get through them. So those grapes are harvested manually.

Ann, well here you are on the other side of the Earth. We begin our autumn while Australia begins its spring. The harvest is far from finished here. All the red grapes are still on the vines. I hope the weather will improve next week.Ken Broadhursthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04430899802705818716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-61574531613546266182010-09-29T08:47:01.411+02:002010-09-29T08:47:01.411+02:00It surprises me to see the harvest underway when a...It surprises me to see the harvest underway when at home we had bud burst only two weeks ago. I arrived with my family in Paris yesterday and we are excited to see the local harvest when we travel to Saint Aignan later this week. The Hunter Valley in Australia will not harvest its grapes until January or February next year.Ann Fergusonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00853361880854050784noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-83220234942226674722010-09-29T06:21:55.134+02:002010-09-29T06:21:55.134+02:00The dried tomatoes look great - like the "sun...The dried tomatoes look great - like the "sun dried" I see at the market. I love them in pastas, and salads too.Diogenesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-75167717029439697082010-09-28T21:44:46.553+02:002010-09-28T21:44:46.553+02:00Ok, maybe 6 puttonyos is the best.Ok, maybe 6 puttonyos is the best.Thickethouse.wordpresshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17187303460677067276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-18275632014492791632010-09-28T18:18:34.765+02:002010-09-28T18:18:34.765+02:00These mechanical harvesters for grapes still amaze...These mechanical harvesters for grapes still amaze me. I see them along the shores of Lake Erie near Westfield. We have a cottage at Lake Chautauqua, seven miles south and more than 700 feet higher. My family once helped with the grape harvest for some cousins of my husband's just north of Lake Balaton in Hungary. But we carried baskets (puttony)* on our backs to put the grapes into.....And the vineyard was small enough so that felt somewhat romantic! And we all celebrated that evening with a meal cooked over a campfire and lots of good cheer.
*If you buy the dessert wine Tokaj Asszu, it will have 3 puttonyos, 4 puttonyos, or 5 puttonyos on the label to signify how many baskets went into the barrel(I think it's the barrel) for that bottle. 5 is the best.Thickethouse.wordpresshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17187303460677067276noreply@blogger.com
