To answer a couple of questions asked in these comments: Yes, New Bern's historic district lies very near one of the two rivers that border the town, and the houses are built high because waters rise several feet during hurricanes. And here's a link to more about Tryon Palace: http://www.tryonpalace.org.

New Bern is a small town with much history and a very active community. It's now a popular retirement destination because house prices and taxes are very low here. Boaters and golfers love it. New Bern is a lovely place to live. We originally chose it because its appearance is much like the New England towns we love.

LibbieAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-40662362409610495842011-03-23T09:20:35.526+01:002011-03-23T09:20:35.526+01:00Love your posts which are a history/cookery/touris...Love your posts which are a history/cookery/tourist information tour. This part of the country is very low and there's a lot of humidity. People don't have basements. Higher up off the ground makes for a better house, even if there isn't frequent flooding.

Anonymous, unfortunately I didn't have time to go to Tryon Palace. Please continue, Ken! Almost all my ancestors were English, Scottish, and German and landed around Philadelphia and moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio and I know almost nothing about North Carolina except that it is beautiful and has a lovely climate. The part of Ohio I'm from used to belong to Connecticut and many of the old houses are similar in some ways to the ones you posted today. But we have brick houses too...My daughter in Bellefonte, PA is in an area where the old houses are made from the stone which was readily available there.Thickethouse.wordpresshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17187303460677067276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18071407.post-63614954037373069202011-03-20T16:20:41.249+01:002011-03-20T16:20:41.249+01:00In many ways it looks like a colonial town in New ...In many ways it looks like a colonial town in New England.
