I always take my car myself as I trust no garagiste on earth! This way you get to hear first hand, what is wrong and if you have anything that should be changed. I can remember waiting in long lines to go through the station. In Ohio, I have no recollection of any type of auto inspection at all. And, of course, in California, we have the famous smog inspection. But the rest of your car can be going to hell as long as the smog numbers are right.
