Updates, but slowly

I got up at 6 this morning and turned on the computer I use to write this blog. The computer informed me that it had updates to install. An hour and 15 minutes later, it at last finished working on the updates.

I don't know either, says Callie.

Now our internet connection is running at a snail's pace. Did the slow internet make the Windows updates take forever? Or did the updates cause the internet slowdown? I don't know. I'll try again tomorrow.

  1. P.S. I've decided that the phone company must be doing upgrades of the fiber optic and ADSL infrastructure during the night and early in the morning. Most people probably aren't on their computers by 6 a.m., especially on Saturdays and Sundays, the way we are. Everything is back to normal now -- the internet is 10x faster than it was 3 hours ago.

    1. Wow! Ten times faster. That sure is a great improvement. Good for you.

    2. Our internet connection is not 10x faster than it was yesterday! It has just come back to what we were used to before the temporary slowdown this morning. No miracles...

    3. What kinds of internet speeds do you get? I've been comparing notes with folks from all over, find the US rates are not very speedy, alas.

    4. Tests show our connection speed is between 1000 and 1100 kB/s for download and about 150 kB/s for upload. I'd love to have fiber optic cable all the way to the house, but as it is it ends at a switching box down the hill about half a mile. Anyway, our connection is five times as fast as it was just a couple of years ago. Yesterday morning the connection was running at only 100 to 200 kB/s for a few hours and it felt painfully slow.

  2. A couple of years ago, all I had to do was sit down and use the computer. My husband fiddled with Things .. updates etc. It is a Apple so that makes things easier too. Now I have been dealing with virus alerts and getting online "protection" .. it is all stressful and scary. There is so much on computers these days, we don't just chat and read anymore, our banking and so much else is on there now. I kind of wish things were not so advanced ... I don't know either :)

  5. Ken, what operating system are you using in your computer? I've noticed a problem here lately with MS Windows 7 updates. Not internet speed related, just takes hours to find any updates. Perhaps a subtle hint from MS to get us to move forward to Windows 10.

    1. I'm on 10 -- 64-bit on my desktop and 32-bit on my laptop. The desktop hasnt yet received the updates, but Walt's 64-bit Win10 system got them this morning. They took more than hour to install.

    2. I run Win 7-64 on a desktop and probably will for some time. It's stable and has all of the features needed for applications running there. I also run Win 10-64 on a laptop and yes, that last update took well over an hour to install. Some folks had major problems after the last install to 1607. I must say, that the auto update feature of Win 10 is THE most annoying thing - can't go manual, like in Win 7. You may want to have a look at Macrium Reflect as a backup (disk imaging) tool. I always use it to make a full image of my hard drive immediately after a Win 10 update (providing everything works!). Easy to restore to a known good state in case of an update glitch.
