More symptoms

I was more optimistic yesterday that I am today about my sore neck and shoulder. I went this morning to put some more of that ibuprofen gel on the hurting area and I noticed that I have three red patches, one of them swollen into a welt, on my chest and shoulder. They don't itch.

I'm wondering if I could have been bitten by an insect that would cause the pain and stiffness in my shoulder and neck. Either that, or I'm allergic to the gel I've been applying. My shoulder feels kind of numb. I guess it's time to go try to see a doctor, or at least a pharmacist.

The temperature here hit 90 and above (32 to 34 ºC) yesterday. That was also the temperature up in the loft. It's supposed to be even hotter today. Thankfully, the temperature this morning is down in the upper 60s. And during the afternoon it's a dry heat — no humidity. We don't have air-conditioning because we so seldom would need it.

  1. Sorry you don't feel better and, yes, it is time to go and see a doctor to diagnose what the problem is.

  2. It could well be a deer-fly bite....on me they don't itch...and I ache in odd places.
But, yes, visit the pharmacist today...ibuprofen is a known trigger for urticaria [nettle rash symptoms]
Bonne chance and get well soon!

  3. Try an osteopathe. I fell a month ago. I sprained my wrist and needed stitches on the eyebrow. Finally, last week, I went to the osteopathe near where we were vacationing and he immediately took care of the wrist -- I could clench my fist and the ligament pain was gone the next morning. He also took care of the neck, shoulder and, back, which had absorbed the shock of the mailbox, but which had gone unnoticed. Also, I had bruised my knee badly in the fall, which affected my gait and my back....

    1. I'm going to see a généraliste this afternoon, but not my regular one because he is on vacation. I fell in June and hurt myself, but had no pain anything near what I'm having now. The pharmacist said it could be an insect or spider bite, and he doesn't think my rash was caused by the ibuprofen gel. He just sold me some paracetamol and a different cream (diclofénac) to rub on the shoulder and my neck. I'm mystified by this whole incident. Glad you are okay.

  4. Hi Ken,
My Mother was allergic to Ibuprofin gel and came up in a rash/welt just as you describe.
Best bite the bullet and see the Quack(Doctor). All the Best, Sue

  5. Oh, gracious , Ken! Please let us know what the diagnosis is. I'm betting on a bite of some kind, too, but what do I know.

  6. Glad you're seeing the doctor about all of this. I hope you'll soon be back to normal, our bodies are great at healing but the healing often takes time. I never tire of looking at your vines in the vineyard.

  7. There are certainly a lot of deer flies (Chrysops spp) around this year and they certainly cause welts. It won't be a spider bite. No European spider is capable of piercing human skin, despite the number of stories one hears about spider bites. Even in places where spiders could actually bite you, it's rarely proveably a spider. Diclofenac is the anti-inflammatory from the generation before ibuprofen. It's effective, but has environmental issues and side effects (which needn't concern you in central France if you are using it briefly). Just make sure you dispose of it by returning it to the pharmacist.

    1. Shingles is nothing to be sneezed at, so I suggest Walt goes to a doctor asap to have a shot so he doesn't get the virus if he's had chicken pox as a child. I hope the treatment given to you will ease the pain very fast. Keep my fingers crossed for both of you.
