Two sunsets

The weather has changed. As William, the host of Télématin on France 2 TV said yesterday, we had our 2014 summer in the autumn, and now we are suddenly plunged into winter while it its still officially autumn. We haven't had a freeze yet, but it's cold (single digits C, meaning below 40 ºF), with low, leaden skies and a fine mist falling a lot of the time.

I had to go back to photos I took on October 30 (above) and November 9 (below) to find these.

Walt checked our weather records yesterday. The last time we had a low temperature below freezing was on December 9, 2013. In other words, the weather last winter (January, February, March) was weirdly mild. And the autumn weather in 2014 has been the same.

  1. What we are getting now, Ken, is "mizzle"....
    a European thing....
in Scotland, Cornwall, Wales and Brittany, it is known as...

    1. LOL, Tim. Ça s'appelle de la bruine en français.

    2. When the porteuse de pain came by this morning, the first thing out of her mouth was « Quel temps minable ! » "What pathetic weather!" Or "This weather is a real joke."

    3. Quel temps minable!....
      I'm repeating that to myself...
      learn by repetition...
so that I can use it...
      Thanks!
And la bruine is good too...
      very phonetic!
Interesting how brume, bruine and brouillard all start with "Brrrrrr!"

  2. Whatever is Télématin going to do when William retires?! :-)

    1. He's been doing that show for 30 years or so now. There's a man named Thierry Beccaro who fills in for him when he takes a day off. Maybe Thierry will eventually replace William Leymergie.

    2. But it just won't be the same!!

    3. Moins.. euh... plus... oui c'est ça... plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

    4. I remember Vincent Ferniot filling in for William occasionally a few years back. I really enjoyed his sense of humor and always thought that he would have been a good replacement for the host «aux dents du bonheur».

    5. It is hard to imagine being on the set and hosting a TV show starting at 6:30 a.m. nearly every day for three decades. As for Vincent Ferniot, we don't see him enough these days.

    6. Bonjour, Ken.

  3. By the way, Tim, the kind of weather we are experiencing and talking about is also standard and expected in Northern California: "heavy drizzle" in winter, and "light drizzle" in summer. Along with drought most of the time.

  4. Glad I don't live where is drizzles like that all the time....Wish I could see William on my tv!

    1. I watch William's Télématin show nearly every morning for 60 to 90 minutes, as I am writing my blog post and having my tea or coffee. I learn a lot and enjoy the features, weather reports, and news. There must be a way for you to get in on the 'net en replay, as they say now.

    2. Hi Evelyn,

I just did some research for you concerning Télématin en replay and found this link:
      http://pluzz.francetv.fr/videos/telematin.html
It works for me in Virginia. I don't see any reason why it would not work in the Deeper South, i.d. Alabama!

P.S. In the old they used to speak French and in was in différé. Bit that's not cool enough theses days!

    3. PP.SS.
I should read what I write before I click on publish! Of course it was i.e. and not i.d.
Also, it was in the old days...

This being said, I tried the link to "pluzz" on my iPad and — guess what...? — it worked!!!! So I don't see any reason why you could not enjoy M. William L. every afternoon after a few short commercials.

    4. Bonjour CHM, that pluzz link works for me and I hope it will work for Evelyn.

  5. CHM, thanks for the link- it works well! I've been gone all day, so I just now have time to explore. I saw something called Dans L'Air with Yven Calvi and then I saw the weather woman. I saw a lot of ads- would like to buy some Jeff de Gruges chocolate, miam, miam! I'm not sure if I saw William or not. I did see a fellow with a missing tooth in a suit. Is that William?

    1. E., it's not a missing tooth, but just a big gap between William's two front teeth. As Dean wrote, teeth like this are called dents du bonheur or dents de la chance. William's name, by the way, is pronounced in French as [wee-LYAHM]. He started the Télématin show in January 1985, and he's still going strong. He was born in 1947.

    2. Love the French pronunciation of William. I didn't look closely at the teeth obviously. I'm happy to have found him and the link to your early am show. It's amazing that I can watch your show on my laptop!

  6. We've had the same fall/summer and then BOOM! winter weather going on here, with even a bit of snow and the first frosts this week. It puts me in the Christmas spirit, so I'm not complaining.

    1. I just saw on the weather reports that the southern part of the Massif Central was having some snow showers. Hope it's pretty. We are hoping for some snow here this winter.
