Not a religious holiday, but...

Here are some photos that I took of one of the most famous cathedrals in France. You should be able to recognize the towers. It's not in Paris and it's not in the Loire Valley. These photos are from several years ago.

Today is Victory in Europe (VE) Day and the second May holiday in France this year. It's another long weekend, in other words, with a lot of people taking tomorrow off work to "bridge" to Saturday and Sunday. The traffic report on Télématin just advised everybody around Paris (and elsewhere) that there will be only minimal car traffic today, tomorrow, and Saturday, but to beware of the Sunday rush to get back home after the long weekend.

  1. By the way, two people who read my blog regularly have told me this week that they are not able to leave comments any more. I thank them for letting me know. I don't know what the problem is and I'll investigate. I've never encountered it myself, so I'm at a loss to explain what is going on. It's a Blogger problem, I have to think.

If you can't leave a comment, please send me an e-mail at kenbroadhurst at gmail dot com and let me know.

    1. I never had a problem leaving comments on your blog but I have on Leon's and others, once in a while.
(I have never been to Chartres).

  2. It is Chatres Cathedral...
our route North from here to Belgium for the ferry....
used to run via Orleans, Chatre, Dreux to Beauvais [Home of Spontex] where we'd have an overnight stop...
this cathedral is visible all the way round the ring-road to the East of Chatres!!
But that's my only view of it...
    never stopped by!!

  3. Ken, I am able to leave comments as long as I'm on my desktop Mac, but I find that with my MacPro laptop, I am unable to leave comments if I'm using Firefox, I think... or Safari... one of them allows it, the other doesn't-- and, I have the same issue with Mitchell's blog and Walt's, both are also blogspot blogs. And, currently, using Safari on my desktop Mac, I no longer see the little icons that go with everyone's sign-in name. I run an older OS on my desktop than on my MacPro. There must be some compatibility glitch suddenly?

(What is that third photo of-- the sundial-looking clock? Where is that?)

  4. (Nadege and Tim, if you've never been to Chartres, you're missing something special!)

  5. p.s. I just tried all three of my browsers -- Firefox 28, Safari 5.1.10, and Google Chrome 34 (all Mac versions), on my OS 10.6.8, and can leave comments with all, but see no icons in any of them.

I'll try with my laptop when I get to school (love a good mystery, apparently)

  7. Would you believe it. ... I can leave a comment via my smartphone.
It was good to see you and Walt yesterday. Got to Orleans about 10 mins late for lunch so on time ;-)

  9. Without looking at any other comments, I think it's Chartres.

    1. We stayed over in Chartes a few years ago and there was a son et lumiere in the evening, using the outside of the church for the images and music.
It was pretty amazing, fantasy stuff, quite unforgettable.
      And of course, free.

  10. I have never had a computer issue that I recall leaving messages on either of the blogs (K & W), HP desktop using Firefox.

Those different cathedral spires were a distinctive identifier for the Chartres Cathedrale for me! Not only is the cathedral
worth seeing and enjoying, but the nearby town was historic and worth a short visit as well. Isn't there a famous labyrinth there, as well? I have a faint memory of my family walking that and pretending to be pilgrims (!)

  11. I love the little town of Chartres, too... very attractive and lots of historic architecture, as well as the canal, and the lovely area behind the cathedral, where you overlook a valley (as I recall).
Okay, this is me using my Mac Book Pro, OS 10.8.5, Safari for Mac 6.0.5... let's see if it works.

  12. BINGO! There's the one that doesn't work.... I just tried to write a comment with FIREFOX 21 for Mac, with OS 10.8.5, and on my MacBook Pro, and the comment simply went away when I clicked on "publish" (using my Google Account).

  13. Ken, thanks for the photos, which bring back memories! The first time I visited Chartres was with my Mother, back in 2001…. Now, let's see if this posts.

  15. I haven't received any e-mails about difficulty leaving comments. Thanks for your comments on the subject.

Judy, that clock is at Chartres, and it looks to me like a 24-hour clock of some kind. I'll have to read about it in the guidebooks.

  16. Judy, that clock is called une horloge astronomique. I found a sketchy Wiki article about it in French, with a link to a more general article about such devices. Apparently, the Chartres clock was completely refurbished a few years ago.
