Cooking and painting

I'm not posting much today. It's my day to go with the dog on her morning walk. And then I want to cook lunch. And I also have to finish painting, or finish helping to paint, the damn kitchen radiator.

The damn kitchen radiator — the back or
non-public side, which is now painted

For lunch I'm making turkey chili. That's a turkey thigh cut into small dice, cooked with onions, garlic, celery, carrots, oregano, hot arbol peppers, cumin, and other spices. And then it's simmered with some tomatoes and their juice, along with some cooked pinto beans.

The forsythia bushes are letting us know winter is coming.

The damn kitchen radiator might be ready to put back up on the wall by this afternoon. And none too soon, since temperatures at Saint-Aignan are plummeting. We are going to need to have some heat on, whether it's the boiler and radiators or just the wood-burning stove. Our low Saturday morning is supposed to be 3ºC, or about 37ºF.

And now I just realized that on Saturday morning it will be my turn to walk the dog again. Merde. Where are my long johns?

  1. May I join you in a little moan? All together now--it's getting colder, the days are getting shorter, there's always something around the house that needs doing....

And I can add one that you can't: I'm not in France! That's the worst one!

On the other hand, there's usually a good meal to look forward to.

  2. You are thorough. I know the impulse that keeps nagging you about the things you know may not be quite as you would wish, but as my mother used to say "What the eye don't see, the heart don't grieve over" - so I've never painted behind my radiators (or no further than the eye can see).

  4. Ken,
    Est-ce c'est le capitaine Archibald Haddock que j'entends? :-)

I have to laugh when I see the word "damn" repeated over and over. I guess there are chores that we like to do and those that we don't like . For me it's picking up the dead leaves.

  5. Beautiful radiator, Ken. :)

We had a cold front come through last night, so for the next week your mother and I will be having temps in the low to mid 70's.

  6. If only I could send you a little of the warmth we have here in the desert. Today it is 102°F (39°C). Yesterday it was 42°C and I sure did enjoy it. Hope for you it doesn't get too cold too soon. But you have a lot of wood!

  7. CHM, I guess I shouldn't complain then. I would be miserable in such heat. Here it is chilly but not yet cold. It's more the prospect of cold that bothers me. And the lack of daylight. When I get up at 6:30 or 7:00 it is still pitch dark outside.

TB, we finished painting that damn radiator yesterday. Today we have to heft it back up on the wall brackets. Then we'll be able to refill the heating circuits, bleed the radiators, and get the heat going.

BettyAnn, thanks. At least it's fresh and clean looking now, to match the rest of the kitchen.

Melinda, hurray for TJ's. Oh, I have to read about that debate right now.

Autolycus, thorough and kind of crazy I guess. But now the deed is done. We didn't paint other radiators in other rooms when we painted the walls and ceilings. I don't know what possessed us this time. Demons, for sure.

Carolyn, thanks for reminding me of our good fortune. We are in France and the winter won't be all that cold compared to many places. And we will just eat good food and muddle through.
